In 2012, ‘Of Soul & Joy’ introduced photography to students at Buhlebuzile Secondary School in the eastern Johannesburg township of Thokoza. The project set out to be a visual platform and a skills development programme for the learners. This was to be the beginning of a long and ongoing collaboration.
It is the story of 34 young people, who are guided by four professional photographers, to open a window on their life and members of their community. Each young photographer portrays their vision of ‘home’ to explore the many sides of the forgotten township of Thokoza.
The exhibition presents the work of 34 pupils and their four mentors.
