Lindokuhle Sobekwa is a South African photographer born in 1995 in Katlehong, near Johannesburg in South Africa. He lives and works in Thokoza. He is introduced photography in 2012 thanks to the Of Soul and Joy project, a lasting social and artistic initiative initiated by Rubis Mécénat in 2012 in the township of Thokoza, near Johannesburg, that aims to empower youth in South African townships through photography. Lindokuhle Sobekwa’s work reflects the social issues affecting communities in South African townships. In 2018, he joins Magnum Photo as a nominee member and becomes an associate member in 2020.
Lindokuhle Sobekwa is a South African photographer and an associate member of Magnum Photo since 2020. He lives and works in Thokoza. He discovered photography through Of Soul and Joy in 2012. In 2017, he was awarded the Magnum Foundation Photography and Social Justice Scholarship, with the help of his two mentors and active members of Of Soul and Joy, Bieke Depoorter and Mikhael Subotzky, also members of Magnum agency. In 2018, he is again awarded by the Magnum Foundation for “Nyaope”, a photographic series on drug use in South African townships. Since 2012, his work has been exhibited in South Africa, France, the Netherlands, Norway and Iran.
